taking Merkel hostage to save the world?
The UNFCCCmeeting of the AWG-LCA and AWG-KP in Bonn is over. The only mentionable forthcoming is: the new cliamte deal will be a very small step away form the old one. In a Press Briefing it was concluded, that there will be NO NEW TREATY but the „negotiations texts, […] will be proposals for amendments to the Kyoto Protocol“. Sure, maybe these amendments include new and more just mechanisms, maybe they include sensible – not dwarfed – numbers for mitigation targets for industrialised countries, maybe these amendments even include a ambitious but necessary funding-system for adaptation and mitigation in developing countries and maybe it finds a bridge towards taking into account the need for development and the alreadey existing responsiblity of the newly industrialised countries like China or South Korea. Maybe. But very likely not. And it will not provide a new governing structure for the global climate regime – which itself is deeply needed.
UNFCCC Executive Secretary Yvo de Boer briefing the press on the final day of the Bonn Talks; he tries hard to find something positive… but fails.
Maybe we should learn from the French. NOT by building dangerouse, expensive and senseless nuclear power plants, but by „bossnapping“. We should (but we probably can’t) take our leaders somehow hostage and demand them to act finally in a responsible way. *think* Well, in democracies, politicians should be (at least right before elections) in a somewhat hostage-like situation: they are dependend on the electorate and should do what the people demand (to get re-elected). In Germany, we have elections. LET US TAKE ANGELA MERKELCLIMATE-HOSTAGE!!!
